5 Great Places To Adopt Pets In The UAE

Rescue a furry friend with the help of our guide to rescue and adoption centres in the region

We all know it’s better to adopt than shop, but the choice of where to rescue your furry friends from can be overwhelming. We’ve pulled together a guide to some of the best places in the region to foster or adopt dogs, cats and more…

Where: 38 Smiles

About: A small, personal rescue centre that only rehouses strays (rather than people’s pets), 38 Smiles was founded in 2011 by Kay, after she moved into a villa numbered 38 with her husband. The villa already attracted a number of stray cats, and Kay ended up adopting one. Since then she’s adopted many more and is now the proud parent of 10 cats and two dogs.

Which pets can you adopt here? Cats and dogs, but when we checked the site was mostly cute kitties looking for homes.

Anything else I need to know? Check out the site’s event page for adoption days and family friendly events, like charity book sales and their ‘Pet Awareness Family Weekend’. Donations and volunteering also welcome!

Where: K9 Friends

About: Started way back in 1989 by Carol Mather and some (human) friends, K9 Friends is now based in a purpose-built centre gifted by the Dubai government, which offers everything from air-conditioned kennels, to an education centre for schools and private groups. Their mission is to reunite lost dogs with their owners and rehome abandoned and stray dogs, as well as educating people about animal welfare.

Which pets can you adopt here? As the name suggests, K9 Friends is home to stray and abandoned dogs of all shapes and sizes.

Anything else I need to know? The K9 friends website has a huge amount of useful advice for current or potential dog owners. Plus, there’s details of how you can volunteer, and the many upcoming events.

Where: Animal Action UAE

About: Founded back in 2010, Animal Action UAE operates in association with Emirates Animal Welfare Society, and have rescued and rehomed thousands of cats and dogs since. Run by volunteers, they are based in Abu Dhabi but hold regular adoption days and fundraising events across both Dubai and AD. They offer options to foster and adopt.

Which pets can you adopt here? You can check out the cats and dogs looking for forever homes on their website.

Anything else I need to know? You can also show your support for Animal Action UAE by purchasing one of their DH60 mugs at one of of a number of locations listed on their site. Cute notebooks are also available.

Where: Animal Specialist Clinic

About: This veterinary clinic in Dubai’s Jumeirah is run by people with a deep interest in animal welfare, and holds regular adoption days around the year. Animal Specialist Clinic offer a whole host of veterinary services, including general check-up, surgery, ultrasounds, vaccinations, x-rays, dental care and more. Check out their facebook page, where you can keep an eye out for upcoming events where UAE animal lovers can adopt a furry friend.

Which pets can you adopt here? Cats, dogs, kittens and pups with no homes are rescued by the clinic.

Anything else I need to know? The clinic also offers a boarding facility and offers grooming services for cats and dogs.

Where: PARA Rescue

About: The Protection of Animal Rights Association Rescue is an Emirati non-profit organisation based in Dubai. Their adoption process includes a week trial for the animal with it’s adoptive family, with adoption counselor support, and they provide lifelong commitment for their pets, taking them back if anything doesn’t work out with the adoption.

Which pets can you adopt here? When we checked there were only (very cute) dogs available to adopt on PARA’s website, but their site mentions birds and cats, and includes lots of snaps of kitties, so keep an eye on the site’s adoption page.

Anything else I need to know? You can also foster pets from PARA, helping them manage the number of rescues and providing a loving home for a pet while it waits for its forever family. Donations of food and supplies are also welcome!
